St Oswald's Church is dedicated to St Oswald who was King of Northumbria. Born in 604, Oswald was the son of Aethelfrith. Following his father's death, Oswald, aged 12, was exiled to the monastery on Iona. There he was taught by monks and baptised into the Celtic Church.
He later returned home to Northumberland to reclaim his kingdom. Following victory in the Battle of Heavenfield, Oswald established a monstery on the island of Lindisfarne. In 642, Oswald marched South to confront the pagan King Penda of Mercia. Oswald was killed.
The spot where he died was associated with miracles - an ash tree (Oswald's Tree or now known as Oswestry) and a spring.
St Oswald's feast day is 5th August and we'll be celebrating his Patronal Day in St Oswald's on Sunday 2nd August with a special selection of music. Everyone is most welcome.
